About Me
Hi, I’m Melba, and I count myself incredibly fortunate to truly love what I do! My journey into this field feels almost magical in hindsight—20 years ago, I discovered my dream career, though it still amazes me how perfectly it all came together. In 2004, I earned my Master’s in Speech Pathology from the University of South Carolina, and since then, I've had the privilege of working in various pediatric settings: outpatient rehab, early intervention, public schools (as both an SLP and AAC specialist), and private practice.
I was introduced to AAC long before technology was widely accessible. Back then, I thought the only way to support minimally speaking students was by creating and organizing pictures of nearly every object they encountered. I made so many mistakes along the way, but those challenges taught me invaluable lessons that shaped my approach to communication support.
It was when I was working in public schools when my passion for AAC truly ignited. I saw firsthand the power of multimodal communication, how access to the right technology can transform lives, and the remarkable impact of a dedicated team working to empower complex communicators.
Through years of working alongside parents and other professionals, I’ve learned so much—both from the challenges we faced and the breakthroughs we celebrated together. I discovered that one of my greatest passions is helping others begin their own AAC adventures and fall in love with the power of communication. That’s the purpose behind AAC Adventure. By supporting and guiding more parents and professionals on this journey, I believe we can reach countless young communicators together, opening doors to expression, connection, and independence for those who need it most. So, thank you for showing up to join me in this AAC Adventure!
